Some Interesting History
A town as old as Devizes is steeped in history.  Until comparatively recent days, Devizes was an important town. It had what was reputedly the largest castle in Europe, it was a major battleground in the war between Stephen and Matilda, it was a Royalist stronghold in the Civil War and a major producer of cloth in the 18th century.
The town was also a stronghold of the dissenters in the 17th and 18th Century and this has left a rich heritage of non-conformist congregations and buildings.
A number of interesting people chose to live in the town and each left their mark.
In these pages we seek to demonstrate the illustrious history of our town.
