Devizes Wharf

Campaigns - Keeping the Wharf as a Public Space

Devizes Wharf is an important part of the town’s history. The opening of the Kennet & Avon Canal in 1810 brought new trade to the town and opened up new markets for its products.

Surprisingly the Wharf was not designated as a “no go” area for housing and the neither of the current occupiers of the two properties there had security of tenure.

The Trust was fearful that the Wharf would go the way of so many of our other open areas and become another place to build houses on.

Working with the other interested parties and Wiltshire Council, we have been able to establish a number of principles for the future of the Wharf which is being enshrined in a Planning Brief. This specifies that:

	The existing buildings are an intrinsic part of the site

	Any area currently used for public events will remain open

	Any new buildings will be small and will be focused on units for artisans to play their trade, thereby attracting more visitors

	A cafe or restaurant will be encouraged

	Toilets available to the public should be a priority

	Any new building on or in the vicinity of the Wharf will have to meet strict site lines so they do not intrude on the historic site
