Air Pollution Issues

Air pollution is going down at last!

The Trust is represented on the Devizes Air Quality and Sustainable Transport Group and welcomes the recent improvements in air quality in our town.

Air quality in Wiltshire has improved significantly across the county in recent year. However, there are still eight Air Quality Management areas (AQMAs) where elevated levels are measured. One of these is in Devizes, where Shanes Castle, Wadworth Corner, and New Park Street have all been over the required pollution limit. Due to recent improvements, it is likely that the Council will be able to start revoking the AQMAs in the next few years. .

Wiltshire Council has a wider Air Quality Strategy for Wiltshire that is focused on improving air quality across the whole of Wiltshire, seeking to prevent any further deterioration, and encouraging interventions that will reduce concentrations of nitrogen dioxide and fine particulates across the county.

What can we do to help?

Transport is one of Wiltshire’s largest carbon footprint sources at 45%. Changes to the way we travel such as walking, cycling or using public transport can play a big role in improving Wiltshire’s air quality.

Electric vehicles have the potential to greatly reduce emissions of air pollutants, particularly Nitric Oxide, at the roadside through eliminating exhaust emissions.
